Very often, it is not only the textile fiber itself that is involved, but also the way the garment has been dyed, treated, or finished. This is precisely why a new garment, a pair of socks, or underwear can sometimes trigger an unexpected reaction. To properly understand clothing allergy, you therefore need to look a little further than the label.
Understanding clothing allergy: what really irritates the skin?
What is commonly called “clothing allergy” most often corresponds to textile contact dermatitis. It generally appears as redness, itching, peeling skin or a burning sensation, and sometimes even patches or localized eczema.
These symptoms can appear within a few hours, but also only after one or several days, which often makes it difficult to identify the garment responsible.
The most affected areas are generally those where the textile is in closest contact with the skin, namely the armpits, groin, buttocks, inner elbows, backs of the knees, waist, and sometimes the feet.
Contact allergy: what exactly are we talking about?
It is useful to distinguish a true contact allergy from simple irritation.
In the first case, the skin reacts to a substance to which it has become sensitive: this is known as allergic contact dermatitis.
In the second case, it is more a repeated mechanical or chemical aggression, without an allergic mechanism as such: perspiration, friction, fabric that is too tight, harsh detergent, or a poorly tolerated textile finish.

Factors responsible for textile allergy
Not all reactions to clothing are therefore “pure” allergies in the strict sense of the term. In practice, several factors may be involved, including:

- Certain “stain-resistant” finishes,
- A garment that is too tight or close-fitting.

Dermatological recommendations point in the same direction: it is better to choose soft clothing, light colors, and, whenever possible, avoid textiles that have undergone unnecessary chemical treatments.
Polyamide, elastane: should you really be wary of them?
The subject of allergies to polyamide or elastane raises many questions. It can be tempting to immediately distrust them when the skin reacts badly to a garment.
However, these materials are not automatically to blame. In many cases, the irritation is mainly explained by the treatments applied to the textile, especially dyes, certain finishes or components linked to elastic parts.
Polyamide and elastane are in fact very useful: in a sock or underwear, they provide support, flexibility, and shape retention. However, if the garment is too tight, not breathable enough, or of poor quality, it can encourage perspiration, friction, and therefore discomfort. The elastic bands found in underwear can also cause irritation, especially on sensitive skin.
