The goal is not to force yourself to eat, but to avoid letting several hours pass without giving back to the body what it needs. And the longer the trail run was, the more this recovery window deserves care.
Rehydration and electrolytes: points to watch out for

How the choice of trail socks can bring you comfort?

Stretching: how should you approach it for post-trail recovery?
Stretching has a good reputation, but after a trail run, it requires a bit of nuance. When muscles have already been heavily taxed, notably during descents, it is not necessarily the best time to seek large ranges of motion or to pull lengthily on painful areas.
In the hours following the race, it is therefore better to avoid deep or heavy stretching. Performed too early or with too much intensity, it can accentuate discomfort instead of soothing it. At this stage, it is preferable to rely on simple movements, gentle mobility, and controlled amplitudes.

It also engages footing, proprioception, tendons, ankles, and the capacity to control descents. All these elements need a little time to find their usual level.
In other words, we do not resume a normal training week simply because the legs seem to be doing better… First, we start by rebuilding a solid base, and it is only after that that we can consider increasing intensity.
Adapting the resumption to the terrain and conditions
Recovery also depends heavily on the context of the race. A rolling, non-technical trail run completed in cool weather does not leave the same marks as a muddy course that is very downhill or contested under intense heat.
Negative elevation accentuates muscle damage, notably in the quadriceps. Mud and unstable terrain place greater strain on the footing, ankles, and stabilizing muscles. The first week must be dedicated to actual recovery: sleeping, rehydrating, eating what is well tolerated, taking care of feet, and moving very gently. The second week can allow reintroducing a little more movement, but without looking for performance. The following weeks serve mainly to rebuild progressively.
The trap, after an 80 km trail run, is believing that you are recovered because the most visible pains have decreased. Deep fatigue, on the other hand, can still be very present!
How to recover after an ultra trail?
Asking oneself how to recover after an ultra trail comes down to thinking broader than just muscles. The ultra often adds a sleep debt, digestive issues, skin injuries, damaged nails, and perhaps even mental fatigue… Even when the legs seem to return, the organism can remain marked for weeks!
In practice, reasoning over four weeks allows avoiding a resumption that is too quick. The first week must be centered on sleep, rehydration, diet, foot care, and very gentle mobility. During the second week, you can integrate a little more walking, very light cycling, or a very short jog if all lights are green.
The third week serves to gradually resume volume, preferably on non-technical terrain. Finally, the fourth week can mark a return toward a more usual operation, while keeping a watchful eye on residual fatigue.
